Abstract:
»: The article narrates a West German autonomous social movement debate from the late 1980s on collective approaches to sexual violence. It discusses the documented attempts at collective agency and accountability in the context of current feminist abolitionist politics. The emerging anti-fascist and autonomous political scenes and the squatting movement were characterized by a high degree of self-organization in all spheres of everyday life. The influence of feminist politics, combined with a radical rejection of ‘the state’, brought about unfinished alternatives (McLeod 2013) to the way sexual violence is dealt with in penal institutions. An analysis of archival documents from 1987/88 reveals struggles around practical solidarity and what it means, following incidents of violence within collectives. Feminist collectivities pushed in the debate for practical solidarity as a form of responsible and collective agency, arguing that actions should be orientated towards structural changes in autonomous groups and spaces as well as towards the needs of people affected by violence.«
